lr-fba uses hotkeys in the same way as all the other retroarch based libretro cores.

Please see this video on how to use hotkeys.
(I wouldnt recommend editing the main retroarch.cfg at all to be honest)

And for the new paths in RetroPie 3

If you watch those 2 videos, you’ll know just as much as me on the subject (which isnt that much! :) )

Thanks, I’m getting further now.

2 things left. In ir-fba I can’t quit a game, I dont see the line to edit?

# Keyboard input, Joypad and Joyaxis will all obey the “nul” bind, which disables the bind completely,
# rather than relying on a default.
input_player1_a = z
input_player1_b = x
input_player1_y = a
input_player1_x = s
input_player1_start = w
input_player1_select = q
input_player1_l = c
input_player1_r = v
input_player1_left = left
input_player1_right = right
input_player1_up = up
input_player1_down = down
# input_player1_l2 =
# input_player1_r2 =
# input_player1_l3 =
# input_player1_r3 =

And you mention I need to I need to use a hotkey to add a filter to my graphics like bilinear, how do I do this as I don’t have a hotkey?

There are no hotkeys in pifba – that is for lr-fba only.

In pifba here are the graphic options:
[Graphics]
DisplaySmoothStretch=1
# Display Effect: 0 none, 1 scanlines
DisplayEffect=0
DisplayBorder=0
MaintainAspectRatio=1

The readme file is here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/pifba/files/

DisplaySmoothStretch - Disable anti-aliasing smoothing.
DisplayEffect - Postprocessing scanline filter. For the scanlines filter it is recommended you switch off "DisplaySmoothStretch".
DisplayAutoRotate - For vertical games auto rotate the display.
MaintainAspectRatio - Keep the original game display ratio or fill the screen.

The link in the previous post shows the locations for the config files.

Then if you use lr-fba you can access the RGUI when the game is running.
Press your hotkey and F1 to bring it up. Or just F1 if no hotkey is set.

You can edit your controller config to enable a hotkey by adding a line like this:
input_enable_hotkey_btn = "x"
Just put the number corresponding to the button you want to use in place of the x.

Then, for setting the Save State and Load State buttons, use this:

input_save_state_btn = "y"
input_load_state_btn = "z"

Again, just replace the y and z with the number of the button you want to assign.

I was able to use that to set up my controller without needing to disable all hotkeys first.

Hi, I searched a lot about this but I can`t find a solution: I want to disable all hotkeys, and create my own hotkeys:
Select + B button = Load State
Select + Y button = Save State
Can someone help me, please?

Thanks
Hello, this topic is very great thanks to patrickm!
I’m a noob here so can you explain how we enter the RGUI (retroarch menu ?).

I think the keyboard shortcut is not activate in the last retropie version. Do we have to uncommment something somewhere or add a line in a cfg file?
Press F1.
If you have a button set to enable hotkeys (like Select), hold that then press F1. (or x on the joypad).

Hi,

I manage to configure my playstation 2 controller with a converter into the raspberry pie. The only problem that I’m having is that when I connect my gamecube controller with its usb converter the configuration file for the playstation gets erase. I try reconfiguring the playstation controller again with retroarch and both the gamecube and playstation retroarch files don’t get erase. I setup the hotkeys for my playstation and gamecube controllers, each on their individual files. For some odd reason only the playstation hotkeys work. When I connect only the gamecube controller it works but the hotkeys don’t work. When I connect the playstation controller the hotkeys and everything work. What is also weird is that I try different snes multiplayer games and only the playstation controller seems to work. If exit out and try only the gamecube controller it works, but if connect the playstation controller it recognizes the controller but it doesn’t work for the second player. The hotkeys for the gamecube controller don’t work regardless if I’m playing single player as the playstation controller do.
Any help will be appreciated thanks.
Also when I create the playstation file, the file says it has root permission when the others just say pie.

Right – well after 20mins of looking I cant find anything in libretro that will auto flip screen when a player dies. Just a manual method using the RGUI.
Which would mean using the hotkeys to bring up the menu, rotate it, then close menu, about 4 button presses I guess.

Maybe the guys on the libretro forums have more info.

Use the .pbp format. It compress the PSX diskimage and save about 30% and you could put
multiple images in one file.

On Windows download the program PSX2PSP (latest version 1.4.2)
You can input 1 to 5 images from one game. The output is one file „EBOOT.PBP“

You can rename the file.
lr_PCSX_ReARMed can read this file.

Open Rgui and select:
– Settings
– Input Settings
– Scroll down until „Disk eject toggle“, setup a key or button for it.
– The same for „Disk next“ and „Disk prev“

Leave the Rgui.
To Swap a disk, first you have to press the hotkey and the button you have set for
„Disk eject toggle“. With this the virtual PSX tray is opened.
Then with the buttons for „Disk next“ /„Disk prev“ select the image that you want to load.
Push again the „Disk eject toggle“ button to close the tray.

You don’t need to restart the game or emulator or so. The game will automatically find the new selected image.

To test put all 3 disks of FF7 in one .pbp file and load the game.
When you are at the screen where you can select „New Game“, chose the second CD as described above. Then you will get a screen that you should insert the first CD.
If you then chose again the first CD as described above, the game will continue as it should.

I ran into this problem while I was configuring Libretro-FBA and PIFBA.

If I try to change any button settings in any Libretro through the onscreen menu (using HOTKEY + F1) they take effect until I close the emulator. Once I re-open it, the settings have reverted to their previous values.

I’ve tried using the ‘save configuraion’ option within the menu to save the settings and then try to load those settings, but it doesn’t work–after I load up the new .cfg file, I am unable to do anything within the menu.

I have also copying the settings within the new .cfg file into the retroarch.cfg within the emulator subdirector, but to no effect.

Can someone give me some guidance as to where to find what’s causing the problem?

Hi,

I managed it.

The confusion stemmed from there being two config files for PS3 controllers (same as there is in your tutorial vid for configuring a wired PS3 controller). I had changed the one that I thought matched the yellow text I got when starting the game, but it was in fact the other file that needed to be edited.

The hotkey video was a huge help regardless. Really like how you explain things and show the logic behind what you’re doing every step of the way. I feel like I’m learning something. Thanks a lot!

The video above shows you where the controller files are held.

/opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/configs/

Go there to find the one for your PS3 controller – they are named fairly well. Then change the value for your hotkey enable button.

Just say if anything in the video isn’t clear.

If you want, you can delete the pre-made files and run the retropie setup script to re-register your controller.

Hi

How can I change the controller configutation for one emulator? I want to change the controller configuration for the PC engine emulator because the default configuration is really weird, all the two button consoles use the same two buttons, A and B but the PC engine emulator is set to B and Y and not only that but the buttons are actualy inverted Y is jump and B is attack!! It seems to me the person who configured the default thought the buttons in the PC engine pad where in left to right order but like the NES the buttons on the PC engine are inverted, the left button is button II and the right button is button I

Also I would like to configure the emulator menu to the home button on the WiiU Pro controller, how do I know which button the home button is and what command do I have to use in the configuration file to set this button without the “hotkey enable” button?

I tried writing the controller configuration directly in the retroarch.cfg of the PC engine emulator, didnt work maybe I did it wrong, an example would be great.

You have to choose your monitor’s native resolution as the video output resolution. Retroarch render resolution should match this. The native res is the maximum res your display is capable of.

You cannot get a perfect 4:3 aspect ratio without scaling artifacts using a fixed-pixel display. Well, there are some exceptions, but SNES isn’t one of them. Your best bet is to use 5x integer scaling on the Y axis and set the X axis accordingly. This will result in a slightly wider than 4:3 aspect with the top and bottom cropped off, but with the original pixel aspect preserved. See “how to get perfect video scaling”

It is highly recommended that you not set video output to anything other than your native res, as this will cause input lag and scaling problems.

EDIT : I see you are using a 720p display. In that case, just follow the instructions for setting integer scale. You can usually get close to a 4:3 aspect ratio. I think 4×3 integer scale gets you close to a 4:3 aspect ratio with NES for example.

Floob has it right. I am on 3beta on a pi2. I first tried remapping the exit combo (that another person recommended) and it did not work.

However, remapping the hotkey by adding Floob’s line to the retroarch.cfg files for fba-lr and imame4all-lr work for all games that the [rSHIFT] keyboard button had been working for to add coins.

Getting MAME games to play nice is not for the faint of heart.

My problem is that when using Mame4all-Pi, I can hit TAB to bring up the menu, but then nothing will input.

I’m using wireless xbox controllers, and for many games, I can’t insert coins, but some games work just fine using iMAME4ALL-lr.

Does the xboxdrv interfere with the USB keyboard?

edit: I solved the coin issue by using the suggestion in the Retropie Wiki FBA section (moving the exit/hotkey button). I still cannot input after hitting TAB when using MAME4ALL-PI.

When you start the game, you should get some yellow text showing which controller file is being used appear at the bottom of the screen.
It will say be somewhere like /opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/configs/….

If you edit that file you can change the behaivour of your hotkeys.

I updated retropie from source. I use a USB controller. Afterwards, found all my settings for my hotkeys still work for the SNES emulator and everything is fine.

But then I checked my retroarch config…both the “all” and the SNES specific, and a couple ones that weren’t labeled as other emulators.

None of them had the hotkey setup, nor any of my settings. I had read the configurations would get overwritten, so I was surprised to find my save/load state buttons still worked. Now I’m concerned as to where it’s getting its commands from.

Any ideas where else to look?

Hi,

I’m using retropie 2.6 on a raspberry 2 B.

I managed to setup my DS4 controller to work both in menu and in game, but for the second time now it suddenly stopped working in game. Menu is juste fine. After it happened the first time I thought I had gone too far with the hotkey setup so I just reinstall from scratch.

Or as you have found, use the joypad equivalent.

By default it should be F2 to save and F4 to load. (Assuming you are using the libretto snes9x next.) Look at the section under hotkeys here:

Hello everybody,

I have 4 PS3 controllers setup over bluetooth to my retropie. I use ‘Select’ as my hotkey enabler, so the fact that ‘Select’ takes a screenshot in game is very annoying!!

Does anybody know how I can disable taking a screenshot?

Sure here’s my /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg. And my /opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/configs/USB_2-axis_8-button_gamepad.cfg.

Yes when I start a game very briefly yellow text flashes at the bottom of the screen showing each controller.

I was able to get hotkeys working in PISNES by changing the key bindings in /opt/retropie/emulators/pisnes/snes9x.cfg but they still don’t work in any of the other emulators. All the others I’m using are part of libretro.

In the videos it doesn’t say to but am I supposed to change anything in /opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/retroarch.cfg?

So confused!

Thanks for the quick reply! I previously watched that video and selected option 1. At the very end of my config file is this line:

input_enable_hotkey = nul

Based on what he said I removed that line from the bottom of the file and changed this section to:

# Alternatively, all hotkeys for keyboard could be disabled by the user.
input_enable_hotkey = alt

Rebooted and unfortunately they still aren’t working.

Does this value exist in your file?
/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg

input_enable_hotkey

I’d remove this line from it (the /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg) , as it exists in your controller file:
input_enable_hotkey_btn = tab

Also, this video may help give an overview (about 27:30 in)

Hi, I’m using original SNES + USB adapters on a Raspberry Pi Model B with version 3.0 of the RetroPie script. With the default install the resting position of the controller is off so I had to use the steps posted on here to recompile the kernel.

The d-pad and all the buttons on both controllers work as expected in Emulationstation and in all the emulators I’ve installed but I cannot get the hotkeys to work. Holding select and pressing start or any of the other triggers doesn’t do anything.

Here’s my controller config in /opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/configs:

input_device = "USB,2-axis 8-button gamepad  "
input_driver = "udev"
input_b_btn = "1"
input_y_btn = "3"
input_select_btn = "6"
input_start_btn = "7"
input_up_axis = "-1"
input_down_axis = "+1"
input_left_axis = "-0"
input_right_axis = "+0"
input_a_btn = "0"
input_x_btn = "2"
input_l_btn = "4"
input_r_btn = "5"
input_enable_hotkey_btn = "6"
input_exit_emulator_btn = "7"
input_shader_next_btn = "5"
input_shader_prev_btn = "4"
# Saves state.
input_save_state_btn = "3"
# Loads state.
input_load_state_btn = "1"
input_reset_btn = "2"

In /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg I’ve tried these two settings for this line as noted in another thread;

# input_enable_hotkey_btn =
input_enable_hotkey_btn = tab

Hotkeys work from a keyboard but when I only have two SNES controllers plugged in they don’t work from controller 1.

Any ideas what I’m doing wrong? Thanks!
Hi, I was having the same problem but i found a solution!
This is most certainly a bug.

Go to the right directory:
cd /opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/configs/

then replace USB_Gamepad_.cfg with USBgamepad.cfg
So…
cp USBgamepad.cfg USB_Gamepad_.cfg
You might want to make a backup first for USB_Gamepad_.cfg

Hope this helps.

This does not work for me. Can you please paste your config? Mine is:

input_device = “USB Gamepad ”
input_driver = “udev”
input_b_btn = “2”
input_y_btn = “3”
input_select_btn = “8”
input_start_btn = “9”
input_up_axis = “-1”
input_down_axis = “+1”
input_left_axis = “-0”
input_right_axis = “+0”
input_a_btn = “1”
input_x_btn = “0”
input_l_btn = “4”
input_r_btn = “5”
input_enable_hotkey_btn = “8”
input_exit_emulator_btn = “9”
input_menu_toggle_btn = “0”
input_load_state_btn = “4”
input_save_state_btn = “5”
input_reset_btn = “2”
input_state_slot_increase_axis = “+0”
input_state_slot_decrease_axis = “-0”

Hi,

First time post – please be gentle. I’ve just upgraded from 2.6 to the 3.02 beta. After some tinkering I now understand the implications of allowing emulators to be chosen by group or ROM and I think it’s fab. However set up is now a little bit more difficult as it pretty much means you have to have a controller config set up for every emulator you’re interested in, (lessening the advantage of Retroarch) as performance varies wildly.

Anyway I digress.

I have managed to configure Retroarch along with hotkeys for various emulators but it seems that lr-fba is refusing to respond to my global Retroarch settings. All of the other emulators set to start with the lr-prefix behave as expected. Any idea what the issue might be? Does Emulationstation itself play a role in setting a file path for example?

The local lr-fba retroarch config file now has a hashed out include path to the main config file and that is set correctly. It has a live input_remapping_directory file path pointing to /opt/retropie/configs/fba/ so that all seems to be in order.

Add this to your retroarch.cfg file
I have different configs set up for each emulator so i can do different things.

input_enable_hotkey_btn = 10
input_exit_emulator_btn = 11

I use arcade controls, so i have a “select” button that is button 10. I am going to use that as my “hotkey” for different macros

Any solution for this yet? I’m having the exact same problem. Exit hotkeys work in all emulators except Atari 2600. The select and start keys don’t even perform their normal function either. For now, I’m keeping a keyboard mounted on my cabinet so I can access escape, F1, F2. I’d really like to get all the functionality contained to the cabinet controls though.

I tried using other mappings just for Atari, but realized that nothing I put in the Atari retroarch.cfg gets picked up to override the default retroarch.cfg. It’s annoying cause Atari only works with player 2 and button y. I’d like for the player 1 button b to be the controls for the first player. And then also add the second player if that’s supported.

Then I realized that nothing I put in any of the emulator-specific retroarch.cfgs is getting picked up. I tried mapping the Sega buttons to be more like the original controls, but no matter what configuration I put in the Sega file, it always uses the default config in the “all” folder.
