I’d love to see that, so any info on getting this working in Retropie would be ace.

That seems to have worked, since roms rthat worked fine before are now no longer playable. I noticed that there’s a menu option for specific ra configs for that game too so I’ll have a tinker with that and post here if I have any issues.

So from what I’ve read elsewhere it may be possible to get what I want. First I need to switch from what I think is the default FBA emulator – PiFBA – to the retroarch compatible one – PiFBA libretro.

Since these use different romsets some work will be required to fix the roms but that’s generally simple, if not quick.

Once that’s done I need to use per game overrides to force certain games to use alternative button mapping. (http://blog.andressm.org/new-retroarch-features-2/)

How do I switch from PiFBA to FBA-libretro?

What Retropie versions are you both using?

I found a solution to my problem. I was misunderstanding the retroarch menu options. The part of the retroarch ui that I thought would set the player controls wouldn’t save it’s settings in the retroarch.cfg, while the second place I found to set the controls would.

This thread is what led me to the solution: https://www.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/retroarch-configurations-refuse-to-save/
Oh right, that’s strange! I think you can save a config from the Retroarch GUI, you may need to create a file somewhere first i’m not sure.
When I try to save a config in the retroarch UI for control layouts it crashes. Would this be the problem? I already have a retroarch config file in /opt/retropie/configs/megadrive/ and yet it hangs when a it tries to save my new button mapping.

Switching back to the PS3 pad I’m also having trouble getting the dpad working but can’t see where the problem is. My config file is this: link. Why won’t the dpad work?
I have tried to set up a wired PS3 controller but I can’t seem to get it to work. Any help would be appreciated. I just use my keyboard as of lately.
If like me you still have your PS3 set up and nearby it could be due to that. To get PS3 controllers working wired I have to cut power to the PS3 (I just switch it off at the wall socket) then press the PS button on the pad once it’s wired to the Pi. The pad will switch the PS3 on once power is restored to the console and the pad is disconnected from the Pi. I’m not sure how long it takes for the pad to give up looking for a PS3 once it’s no longer wired to the Pi.

Sorry if I’m being a little dense, but would any part of that also apply to the DS4 pad?

I assume you’re referring to the section that reads “You can now configure d-pad per button (in case sdl does not detect the hat on the controller) so it adds the ps3 d-pad control on all games” but unfortunately my issue is a little different to this. The hat is detected fine, but it’s input is interfered with input from analogue sticks that also register input.

I know this is a very old thread but I’m having similar issues with FBA and a Dualshock 4.

From what I can gather the changelog notes below mean that the d-pad should always work with PiFBA. This is seperate from the joystick axis setup in the fba2x.cfg file.

Is it possible to simply disable the JA_LR and JA_UD axis variables in the fba2x.cfg file? I’ve tried commenting them out but it seems if they aren’t there it defaults to 0/1.

That did the trick. I think the change also made the ES menus a little more responsive but that may just be all in my head. I only have 1 more problem with the DS4 pad setup now, but that’s for another thread. Thanks for the help! :)

Playing around with PiFBA I edited the config file to the correct buttons (or tried to at least…) and it works with that.

I might be wrong but I think it’s normal for Emulation Station to prompt you to configure the controller on start-up if it’s not been used with it before, regardless of whether it’s set up in the Retroarch config file or not. I’d tried setting up the PS4 pad myself and completed the “Register Retroarch Controller” setup from the Retropie config script but still had to set it up in ES too.

I’m also getting the problem with the pad not responding in games. I’ve tried with SNES and Mega Drive/Genesis, though I doubt it actually makes a difference trying in different emulators. I also tried two different PS4 controllers, both Dualshock 4. Neither gets any response once ES has started the emulation.

I’ll try setting up FBA or something to see if that works.

edit: removed the quote of the previous post as the text was really big for some reason and didn’t read easily.

I’m using the raspi-config’s Turbo preset and everything seems fine.

Well, apart from when I try anything involving a network connection (updating packages, scraping game data, downloading the PS3 controller driver through retropie-setup.sh…) If I do this without reverting to a lower preset I get crashes during network activity. No idea why, and it’s knackered a few things in the process.

I’ve been using a pair of the SNES styled iBuffallo controllers for a few weeks. I can’t recommend them though. The face buttons work fine, as do the triggers, though the d-pad registers lots of false inputs. When left idle it’ll occasionally send false up, left and rights. This happens during play too, and while it’s not a huge problem in many games, in some (Street Fighter style games, for example,) it’s significant.

I’ve had better luck with the Mad Catz Street Fighter X Tekken Fightpad for PS3. It set up fine and works great. The build quality is great for the price, though the face buttons feel a little cheap, and it’s very good for most games. Had theRPi2 Model B not just arrived and made good N64 emulation possible I’d just use these.

I’m currently trying to get the PS4’s Dualshock 4 working and while it works fine in ES, as soon as I go into a game it loses all functionality, as does the keyboard. I can only exit out by disconnecting the controller and pressing the Esc key on the keyboard. I’m not sure why this is happening, but the pad is wired on an extremely long cable so maybe it’s a power issue. I have no technical knowledge whatsoever though so that’s just a guess.

Setting GnGeo’s cfg file I can set it to Unibios and get it working just fine, holding A+B+C at game startup. I can access the cheats with A+B+C+D+START during the game. Sadly I can’t set per-game control layouts but since it’s NeoGeo and all games use 1-4 buttons I’m happy to leave that as is on my SNES style pads.

Sadly the emulation doesn’t seem 100% but that’ll come closer in future GnGeo versions I expect. Should FBA allow per-game control layouts in the future I might switch over to that but in the meantime this is fine.
