rookervikParticipant
Ooh, I don’t know about changing all the system logos. Haha. That took me longer than actually drawing all the systems. And it wasn’t merely as simple as shrinking them. I actually had to draw them. >.< It’s a neat idea tho!
rookervikParticipantAnd the final entry for tonight: Super Castlevania IV for SNES. This one came out SMOOTH.
rookervikParticipantCan you guess what game this is from? Uploaded image has the answer. This took forever to paint. LOL.
rookervikParticipantGot bored. Here’s a Revenge of Shinobi (Genesis/MD) splash screen.
rookervikParticipantGhouls N Goblins Arcade
rookervikParticipantSuper Mario World – RetroPie
rookervikParticipantNicely done, lilbud!
rookervikParticipantOh shoot, I haven’t done a game splash screen in a while. Haha. I still have Starfox and some others on the back burner. I should probably get back into it. Still need to finish this HD Megaman X splash screen + movie I was working on.
rookervikParticipantYayuh. You can do it for me. I’m not into the whole github thing. Missed you in IRC for the last 2 months. :P
rookervikParticipantFinished the theme. Omnija helped me test it out.
rookervikParticipantDon’t worry, I’ll do all the systems. Including Wii and those that you’d only use on PC. (Since I also use ES on PC, now.) I was just trying to do the systems in order of popularity and release a WIP theme for those people that don’t use a lot of systems.
rookervikParticipantThese are what I’ve finished so far. GBA I haven’t finished the console. Some of the others I haven’t done the console logo. Game Gear needs a new logo, I really don’t like how it came out. But I’m working on it.
rookervikParticipantLet me know which systems you use on your RetroPie and I will try to get to those first. All the pixel art and coloring the themes is taking a long time.
rookervikParticipantI haven’t finished the theme, yet. The pixel art takes a while to make. Plus I have to re-do all the logos as pixel, too. So that doubles the time. And each system has unique color schemes. It will take me a while to finish up the theme >.<
rookervikParticipantThe only problem with using massive box art (or screen shots) is that the Pi, even Pi2 Overclocked, will really bog down displaying large-scale art for games. Even 640×480 box art can show a very large drag on the system. :( I ended up shrinking all the large art I had to no larger than 320×240 to make sure the game-browsing maintained a fluid speed.
rookervikParticipantCorrect. EmulationStation does not display strokes in SVG files. I’ve had extensive testing on this subject. You are forced to “convert strokes to shapes” to get them to display in ES. Sadly, this GREATLY increases the file size of the SVG in most cases :D
I don’t think we’ll ever see an update for ES though.
rookervikParticipantYou use Notepad and hope for the best :D I use Notepad++
Lots of referencing the Simple theme, lots of trial and error.
I made a little Windows app that will help you with the measurements that ES uses.
rookervikParticipantAh, yeah I’ve seen those. They look great. Can’t really be used on the Raspberry Pi. If you have more than 10 systems, backgrounds of that size will make ES crash :( Work great on PC though.
rookervikParticipantWhat’s tronkyfan up to?
rookervikParticipantHeh, finalized the look of the theme. LOL. Removed the characters. Now I just have to draw all the consoles, and do the system logos in pixel art. Prolly take forever >_<
rookervikParticipantGetting a little further. Adding a WIP to let you see. Not sure I like the System Select screens. Circular shape visually helps you realize you’re in a different section than “game selection” but I’m not sure if I like it.
On the System-Select, the ring color can change per-system. So can the backgrounds and font colors in the Game-Selection screens. Takes no additional RAM to change the colors.
rookervikParticipantGlad it can be useful! I am going to try to add a rectangle tool so you can get <maxsize> as well. Since the Boxart and Gamelist requires you to enter that to size their display.
rookervikParticipantI was shooting for an average pixel size. Since the Raspberry Pi can’t handle a wallpaper for each system. Otherwise that would be the best idea. Tho, these wallpapers are only 480×272… it would be interesting to see if the RPi could display 32+ of these wallpapers, since they are so small.
rookervikParticipantVery sexy! Love how simple it is. The colors are great! Haven’t installed it yet. Curious what the System Select looks like. That’s the hardest part to theme with that gnarly white bar across the middle!
rookervikParticipantI use a mix of Photoshop and Illustrator for the splash screens. If I do pixel art matching the resolution of the system the game’s from, then I just use Photoshop. For the HD images, I usually vector the text first, then color and add effects in Photoshop.
rookervikParticipantHaha. I’m highly socially anxious. Even my best friends in real life don’t hear from me unless they message me online.
I’m working on 2 right now. Trying to animate this Megaman one. Right now I’m trying to remix the intro music. Got this so far. https://db.tt/h6z6Uml5 Having trouble with the synths. Anyone better at music than me? I generally place 250th out of 300 entries with my music. >.<
Also working on the Starfox splash screen. Rendered the Arwing, but don’t know if I will do it HD or Pixel.
I suppose original Zelda can be next.
PS, these are fun. :D
rookervikParticipantHaha, I have no idea how I’d animate it for a video. I guess I could have the RETROPIE wave in like it does in Megaman X and then have the X come in stretched then snap to shape.
rookervikParticipantPlease do! Use any that I’ve posted. :D PM me suggestions to work on next if you have any requests. I’ve done most of the games I wanted to already. Can’t promise I’ll do everything, but some direction is surely appreciated.
rookervikParticipantGah this is so sexy! And you even have retro consoles under there! Brilliant! Amazing job!
rookervikParticipantHaha, I thought about adding the SEGA sound effect. Decided to just leave it silent since it would be a little strange hearing SEGA but seeing RETROPIE. LOL. I think Ronoh is going to sing it for us. Let’s wait and see. ;-)
rookervikParticipantWoo you sell Rastendos? I’m sure you got the ok from the devs of RetroPie to include it. I’d like a share of the money, too, since I made all the graphics for the Carbon theme. Thanks!
rookervikParticipantAh yeah, frotz doesn’t have a config for screen size. When you start one of your z-machine games, there’s a short time you can press a button to get to a quick little RetroPie config. You need to “Select framebuffer res for frotz” and set it to something like 640×480. That’s the original font size for those games. And looks so much better. You can actually read it! Ahhh yes, sexy.
rookervikParticipantI think adding the games to the setup script (install additional games) would be the best idea. I, personally, don’t play any of the ported games on the Pi. I have a PC for that. So they really just waste space on my Pi. But for people that would like the games, it would be great to have the ability to install them and links in the Ports section. :)
rookervikParticipantFor games with multiple discs, you can create a folder and place all of the CDs into that folder. Folders are shown as a different color in the game menu. They can have images attached to them as well. Keeps the PSX folder looking super-clean. :D I do the same thing with Commodore 64 as most of the great games have 2+ disks.
I believe optical media is disc, and floppy is disk. Haha
rookervikParticipantI just leave a Windows PC connected to \\retropie\roms\<system> and delete whatever roms don’t work. For the changes to be shown, an ES reboot is needed. EmulationStation reads the directory structure and gamelist.xmls only at first boot.
