LOL, it’s atari 2600, updates are not necessary. And frankly with an image, I can extract it, attempt an upgrade, and if it breaks extract it again! Thanks. let me know how we can accomplish
raoulangelParticipantHey i have a weird idea. The hardware and soldering and wiring I have down pat but the software part with all these different versions and configurations is just too much. Any chance you can create an image of your working Retropie image that I can download and use as a starter image?
raoulangelParticipantHi! Just got to working on this, everything seemed to go ok until I got here:
pi@retropie ~ $ sudo dpkg -i gamecon-gpio-rpi-dkms_1.0_all.deb
Selecting previously unselected package gamecon-gpio-rpi-dkms.
(Reading database … 78242 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking gamecon-gpio-rpi-dkms (from gamecon-gpio-rpi-dkms_1.0_all.deb) …

raoulangelParticipantDidn’t get it to work, there were a few errors when running the scripts you indicated.. You mentioned installing it manually, can you elaborate?
raoulangelParticipantWe lost power due to the storms here in PA the last few days so I have not been able to try any of this stuff yet. Hopefully tonight I can focus on it. I am also OFF tomorrow so I can hopefully complete the project by noon. Will let everyone know and maybe even have some pics and video of it in action!
raoulangelParticipantYou’ve been really helpful thanks! If yo don’t mind my picking yor brain for one or two more things..
When you are inside a 2600 game, what do you use for game select, reset, and difficulty switches? I need to get those mapped out..
Also, is there a way to map the “esc” key to exit games back to the menu?
raoulangelParticipantSounds great.. BTW, the pinout you posted here is correct?? (someone mentioned it was different from the original, but I have already done my soldering…)
raoulangelParticipantHow do I get the db9 driver loaded into the RPI? I’m using an A+ model. Is it built into the retropie code already or do i have to do something with an install or configuration?
Thanks
raoulangelParticipantWill do! Thanks, will let you know how it goes. Anyone have an answer to the reset, select and difficulty keys?
raoulangelParticipantWell, I couldn’t get the command line to run, the command listed here says that the command isn’t recognized. So, I used the method in the video to eliminate all but the libreto-stella emulator from the emulationstation list.
I have two additional questions, if anyone knows.. 1. Where is the graphic that says “ES Emulationstation loading..”, I would like to replace it with something custom, also, in libreto stella, what are the control keys for reset, game select and difficulty a/b?
Thanks!
raoulangelParticipantHmm… says “retroarch – command not found
raoulangelParticipantyes!!! i will have to add that to my local file and see what happens! Thanks!
raoulangelParticipantNo, it’s more than that, I already know how to mod the local system to run standalone programs such as MAME, which I have done already. However, Stella does not seem to have a standalone file that I can find to run, it appears to be part of the retroarch system. Now, if there is a command line for Retroarch that runs Stella from the command line, I could use that but I need to know what that is!
raoulangelParticipantFrom the lack or responses here I will assume this is not possible?
As an alternative idea, can ALL but the Atari 2600 Emulator display in Emulationstation?
it seems that even when I only have ROMS for Atari in there, the standalone ports also display. Is there a config file or something that needs to be edited?
I am wprking on a project i am trying to complete by Friday.. If anyone can help, please do!
raoulangelParticipantI like it too, for multiple EMUs, but I am looking for atari only.. I wonder if it’s even possible
raoulangelParticipantI am working on an Atari only project, I’d like to get away from emulationstation, the way you can do for MAME.. Do you know the way?
raoulangelParticipantThanks for the guide! Mounting mine into an Atari cartridge.. How are you running the emulators? Through emulationstation or standalone?
raoulangelParticipantAs far as the lag, I notice it with sub-B+ models. Anything A, A+ or B has terrible lag. Configuration of the system and overclocking seems to be more successful with the B+ and Pi 2 B models..
raoulangelParticipantGot it to work great… Here’s the result!!
One other thing, has anyone gotten trackball/mouse/dial controls to work? Is there a driver like the old DOS mouse drivers that are needed?
raoulangelParticipantSo you copied the retrogame.c folder to the ROMS folder? How do you make it run at startup?
raoulangelParticipantproaudiosoft, I followed this:
I have a pi2, just got it going using a method, super easy:Compilation
$ git clone https://github.com/ian57/Raspicade-Retrogame-2Player-Pi2.git
$ cd Raspicade-Retrogame-2Player-Pi2
$ makeWhen I typed make, I get:
“make: Nothing to be done for ‘all’.”
What happened? This is not as simple as you made it sound…
raoulangelParticipantProaudiosoft… I am going to work on this tonight.. I’ll follow your previous post and if I hit a wall I’ll hit you up. Thanks
raoulangelParticipantActually, if you have the space for all that, I suggest this:
https://www.ultimarc.com/minipac.html
It’s what I used on my Zaxxon Tabletop cab. Super-simple, uses USB for power and I/O, and There was enough room inside the box for the extra board.. I wanted to use the GPIO this time, as I felt all the hype about how useful, convenient and simple it was had convinced me…
raoulangelParticipantThat mk_arcade_joystick_rpi one I tried over and over… I followed every step, even copied and pasted th commands to the PI using tty, but when I tried to load mk_arcade_joystick module it said the module was not found..
I didn’t miss a step, so where is this mysterious module?
raoulangelParticipantHey Roo, thanks for the assist.. the last part I need is an auto log in.. It stops at the login prompt, and when I put in the user name and password it then goes to MAME.. How do I get it to skip prompting me for that?
raoulangelParticipantAdafruit 5″ 800×480 LCD with 40 pin connector
raoulangelParticipantThe Pi is supposed to be portable for a reason.. I am using it for my project because of it’s ability to provide the flexibility without the space requirements. The Power is supplied by 4 “D” batteries in the orioginal battery compartment under the unit. Cannot remove that. The extenal power plugs into a barrel connector at the side of the unit, the wires are attached internally to the power ports of the Pi and the screen. The speakers are powered from the Pi USB ports, and so will the LED lights for the Marquee. The interference was there even when everything was outside the enclosure laid out on the table.
raoulangelParticipantI moved the speakers to 10 inches from the Pi unit outside the container and it still hums as long as the screen is on.
raoulangelParticipantPi 2 version B, Adafruit svga screen with video driver board (using HDMI), 3-watt USB-powered speakers with 3.5mm jack, Ultimarc Mini-pac, wired to Arcade Mini stick and 14 buttons… Powered by the built in 4 “D” battery compartment…
raoulangelParticipantActually, it’s a mini-arcade cab, used to be a Coleco Zaxxon Tabletop. Barely 6 x 7 x 8 inside, just enough room for the screen, video board, Pi, speakers, Mini-Pac kb encoder and wires!! So everything is close range… (pic attached) I will try and see if I add one of the Pi Audio breakout boards if it will help.
raoulangelParticipantThanks to all for the assist! Samples working, I am working on the snaps and cfg files next. I do have another question but I will start a new topic. Again Thanks Roo! Been playing with the startup stuff, got myself some reference materials and learning some new stuff.
raoulangelParticipantRoo, you said here:
I would disable EmulationStation from automatically starting using the ~/RetroPie-Setup/retropie_setup.sh script
When you do this, the script will modify /etc/profile and remove this last line
[ -n “${SSH_CONNECTION}” ] || emulationstation
Which in English means “if this is not an SSH session, start emulationstation”
You’ll want to add back in that same command, but in place of emulationstation, add the command to launch mame. Something like
/opt/retropie/emulators/mame4all/mame
Not sure what you mean by “disable emulationstation using the ~/RetroPie-Setup/retropie_setup.sh”, I found the .sh file but is there a command I run, or just open it and edit it and remove something?
raoulangelParticipantI thought pimenu in mame4all was for the gui?
raoulangelParticipantCan retropie be modified so that when powered on it skips the retropie and emulationstation and just runs mame at startup of the unit?
raoulangelParticipantI get it, and I will try that.. is there a non-GUI browser for internet access in Unix?
