Hi there!
I discovered some time ago the .pbp file format. In fact it’s a compressed format meaning that you could somehow compress your isos to let them use less storage space (excellent if you only have a sd card). Also in case of multi-CD game then all of them will be packed and compressed within a single pbp file! There are tons of how-to’s on the Web. The most famous tools are PSX2PSP v1.4.2 and PsGUI300beta.
Hope this helps!
cheers,nemo93Participanthi murderousmincepie,
you have to edit the config files that are in the “/opt/retropie” directory. You should have a “/opt/retropie/configs” folder at this location. If you don’t then something is going wrong with your Retropie installation :(
If this helps I’ve posted 2 of my config files in other posts:
https://www.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/xbox-controller-config/#post-15617hope this helps.
cheers,nemo93Participanthey Merovingian,
same issue as always :) have a look there:

cheers,nemo93Participanthi waddupbeazt,
not sure I understood your question about retroarch :( You don’t have activate/deactivate NOTHING as far as I know. Just put the file I shared into the path I mentioned and that should do the trick. I consider you’re using retroarch as the SNES emulator though. If you’re not using retroarch then there is nothing I can do for you as I’m speaking.
regarding the permission issue please take a look at this other post:

cheers,nemo93Participanthi wartotal,
let me share with you my piFBA config file. It works nicely and as bonus you’ll get my settings for a xbox 360 controller if by any luck you’re using this controller.
You have to put this file into your piFBA directory, which should be:
/opt/retropie/emulators/pifba/
The most important section is at the bottom of the file:
[Graphics] DisplaySmoothStretch=1 # Display Effect: 0 none, 1 scanlines DisplayEffect=0 DisplayBorder=0 MaintainAspectRatio=1
hope this helps.
cheers,nemo93Participanthi,
seems to be an issue with 384MB split and EmulationStation running @1080p. Look here: https://github.com/Aloshi/EmulationStation/issues/192
you’re definitely not alone :)hope this helps.
cheers,nemo93Participanthi,
to edit controller settings within mame4all you need a keyboard connected to your Pi (at least the first time you launch mame4all) and hit “TAB” key. This will bring a menu where you’ll be able to setup your key bindings. Worth to note that mame4all keeps the controller settings in a binary format under the “mame4all/cfg” folder.
hope this helps.
cheers,nemo93ParticipantHi there,
indeed I suppose you’re talking about PSX emulation right? If so, have a look here: https://github.com/libretro/RetroArch/wiki/RGUI#playstation-disk-swapping
I never tried this myself but it seems to be working quite good. Hope this helps.
cheers,nemo93Participanthi zantos,
have you tried to follow this guide from the wiki? I strongly recommend you to go for the #3 init script solution.
=> https://github.com/retropie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Setting-up-the-XBox360-controllerJust to be sure, I’ve shared my piFBA and SNES Retroarch config files in another posts. You should give it a try. I’m using a *wireless* xbox 360 controller but it should be ok.

- piFBA config: https://www.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/pifba-fullscreen/#15626
hope this helps.
cheers,nemo93Participanthi waddupbeazt,
I can help you only for SNES as of now as I didn’t play much with n64 and GBA. Enclosed to this post you’ll find a retroarch config file to be used for SNES. The mapping is accurate as far as I can tell and to exit Retroarch you have to press Select and Start.
you have to copy this file to this location:
/opt/retropie/configs/snes/
hope this helps.
cheers,nemo93Participanthi Guys,
@billipo: to play with metadata on the current EmulationStation 2.0 release could be tricky and lead to crash anytime you try manipulating the gamelist.xml file. A bug report has been filled by Aloshi himself (HERE). The good news is that Aloshi is implementing sqlite to get rid of this gamelist.xml file (instead it will be kind of small database, easier to manipulate and also use less resource).
@borlandoflorida, smatticus, Grayson: don’t forget to include the following parameter in your /boot/config.txt if you’re using a newer firmware on your Pi (starting from firmwares/kernels after the 24th of May).hdmi_force_mode=1
As mentioned in a previous post at this location:
https://www.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/display-raspi-doesnt-care-about-video-resolution/#7003as Grayson said I strongly advise you to run the emulators at the VGA resolution. Yet it’s definitely possible to run ES at 720p (1080p doesn’t work for me) and have the resolution to switch to VGA by playing with the “runcommand.sh <number>” script.
@ranem123: n64 emulation on Pi is delicate but lot of progress is being made these days since the release of an even better optimized version of mupen. More here:
https://www.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/mupen64plus-ricrpi-branch/
hope this helps.
cheers,nemo93ParticipantHi NF3RNO,
here is the link (http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=78&t=58395) :) and the link to the Git Repo (HERE).
Could you please share your config files and perhaps the pre-compiled binaries? Do you know if it’s possible to quit the emulator by pressing a controller button (or a combination)? Finally do you have a compatibility list or some thoughts as I’m curious to know what you meant by “mupen64plus-rpi works pretty well” :)
Thanks a lot!

have a look at this post about the permissions issue: https://www.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/no-writing-permission-for-retroarch-cfg/#post-12219
hope this helps.
cheers,nemo93Participanthi smatticus,
to make piSNES the default simply edit the “es_systems.cfg” file and spot the Super Nes section. Amend it like this:
<system> <fullname>Super Nintendo</fullname> <name>snes</name> <path>~/RetroPie/roms/snes</path> <extension>.smc .sfc .fig .swc .SMC .SFC .FIG .SWC .zip .ZIP</extension> <command>/opt/retropie/emulators/pisnes/snes9x %ROM%</command> <platform>snes</platform> <theme>snes</theme> </system>
hope this helps.

nemo93ParticipantThomas, anyone with “permissions” issue,
please have a look here: https://www.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/no-writing-permission-for-retroarch-cfg/#post-12219

definitely related to permissions within the “/opt/retropie” folder. Have a look at this location please: https://www.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/no-writing-permission-for-retroarch-cfg/#post-12219
hope this helps.
cheers,nemo93ParticipantGents,
for the sake of clarity, let’s try to use a single thread regarding the “permissions” if you don’t mind?
I’ve proposed a workaround here: https://www.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/no-writing-permission-for-retroarch-cfg/#post-12219
hope this helps.

cheers,nemo93ParticipantHi Guys,
I was a bit reluctant to propose this workaround as I haven’t tested it thoroughly but given the increasing number of posts about it here we go!
Launch a command line and issue the following command:
$ sudo chown -R pi:pi /opt/retropie/
You should end up with:
$ ls -la /opt/retropie/ total 24 drwxr-xr-x 6 pi pi 4096 Jul 1 22:40 . drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 Jul 1 21:34 .. drwxr-xr-x 17 pi pi 4096 Jul 1 21:47 configs drwxr-xr-x 13 pi pi 4096 Jul 1 21:42 emulatorcores drwxr-xr-x 24 pi pi 4096 Jul 1 22:30 emulators drwxr-xr-x 5 pi pi 4096 Jul 1 22:31 supplementary
Let me know if this does improve your situation.
cheers,nemo93ParticipantHello there,
I might getting closer as it turns out a “region” or “region_detection” can be seen in the “/opt/retropie/configs/all.retroarch-core-options.cfg” file. The thing is that I’m not sure what value(s) I have to set :( Is it “japan” or “ntsc-j” or “J”?? I don’t know…yet! I’ll update this post if I find something.
cheers,nemo93Participanthey atimmins,
piSNES comes with its own configuration file. It’s named “snes9x.cfg” and you’ll find it under the pisnes directory in “/opt/retropie/emulators/”.
it’s really weird (again) as I can’t reproduce this. Perhaps you could try downloading another version of this game? to be sure.
cheers,
nemo93ParticipantHi octubrq,
have a look there, scroll down a bit: https://www.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/how-to-use-mame4all/
hope this helps.
cheers,nemo93ParticipantHi All,
I confirm the segfault as well. Yet the games still run fine…
cheers,nemo93ParticipantHi petrock!
unfortunately I have no idea on how to issue a pull request :( For sure I could describe and detail the installation steps, this is what I’m doing hereafter!
* to install the new Fullspeed, perfect-frame PCE-CD core (LINK)
1. download the zip archive provided in the link above
2. unzip it in some temp directory (this creates a “pce” directory)
3. copy the pce/cores/mednafen_pce_fast_libretro.so file over the /opt/retropie/emularcores/mednafen-pce/$ sudo cp pce/cores/mednafen_pce_fast_libretro.so /opt/retropie/emularcores/mednafen-pce/
4. copy the retroarch binary from pce/retroarch to /opt/retropie/emulatorcores/Retroarch
$ sudo cp pce/retroarch /opt/retropie/emulatorcores/Retroarch/
5. copy over the retroarch core options file to the configs folder
$ sudo cp pce/cfg/.retroarch-core-options.cfg /opt/retropie/configs/all/
6a. edit EmulationStation “systems” file (vi .emulationstation/es_systems.cfg) and locate the PC Engine section. In the COMMAND line, look for libretro.so and replace it by mednafen_pce_fast_libretro.so.
6b. alternatively you could simply rename the new core file to libretro.so to replace the older one.$ sudo mv /opt/retropie/emularcores/mednafen-pce/mednafen_pce_fast_libretro.so /opt/retropie/emularcores/mednafen-pce/libretro.so
* uae4all2 (LINK)
it seems that there is no way to configure a controller yet (conf hardcoded) so might be wise to wait a bit more to include it within Retropie?hope this helps.
cheers,nemo93ParticipantHey Kitchuk!
I do confirm. You have to use or properly configure the “.retroarch-core-options.cfg” file provided in the new FAST Pc Engine core zip package. This file must be copied over the /opt/retropie/configs/all/ directory.
If you don’t do so, then you won’t have any sound while playing any (of the fantastic) PCE games. For further reference I’m including this file in this post.
hope this helps.
cheers,nemo93ParticipantHi Maurice,
I’m afraid I can’t help you much there as I never tried those games myself with Retropie. I just found this on the wiki:
I’m using the other emulators and all of them required to be configured by editing a config file (retroarch.cfg, fba2x.cfg, snes9x.cfg, etc). The config files are either in the “configs” directory (now located under /opt/retropie) or straight in the emulator folder. I’m not sure but it looks like Doom used RetroArch. In such case you could try:
$ cd /opt/retroPie/emulators/RetroArch/installdir/bin $ ./retroarch-joyconfig >> /opt/retroPie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg
Hopefully this will give better result. If not you’ll have to test/retry by manually editing the retroarch.cfg file.
hope this helps
cheers,nemo93Participanthi tafazzi!
this is really weird. What controller are you using? Perhaps you could try to remove the es_input.cfg file from the .emulationstation directory? After the deletion of this file, reboot your raspberry and EmulationStation should bring up the input configuration menu where you’ll be asked to press various buttons on your controller.
in order to remove the file, locate the “.emulationstation” folder located in the home directory (/home/pi/). The es_input.cfg file should be there. on the command line you could type the following:
$ rm /home/pi/.emulationstation/es_input.cfg $ sudo reboot
hope this helps.
cheers,nemo93ParticipantHi ademcc,
your es_systems.cfg looks definitely fine and I’ve switched also to Retropie 2.1 so for sure mame4all is working fine. I have not so many troubles with my romset to be honest. Some roms lack sound or doesn’t launch but only a handful of them.
You talked about 0.37b11 romset, which is not supported. You have to stick to 0.37b5 romset (Google is your friend :)). Even if there shouldn’t be many differences between the two romsets it’s best to follow the specification! If mame4all tells you that files are missing, it’s sure 100% that it’s not the good rom for this version of mame. Did you try also the various “sets” (set 1, set 2, world, bootleg) for a given rom?
All in all you have to be sure you’re using the proper 0.37b5 romset.
hope this helps again :)
nemo93ParticipantBump!
I’ve not switched to Retropie v2 yet so perhaps the core option is there now? anyone? I’ll have more time this weekend to check that by myself if I got no answerEDIT: ok I’ve switched to Retropie 2 and I confirm it still not possible to select region under retroarch/picodrive core options… I’ll try to compile the picodrive core by myself but I trust petrock did everything properly so I’m afraid there is no solution to address this yet. Perhaps with the next retroarch release? wait & see :)
nemo93Participanthi!!
You should give a try to piSNES. Great compatibility and works like a charm. At least the behavior you described never occured with this emulator. I believe you just have to comment out the proper line in the es_systems.cfg file.hope this helps.
nemo93Participanthello Guys,
this is weird. It should work almost out-of-the-box… Sorry to insist on that but did you ensure that paths are correct under the Mame section in es_systems.cfg? Do you have only one COMMAND line commented out (without the #)? Also did you try with the newest Retropie release (2.0)?
After triple checking paths and COMMAND line then just let focus on one rom for instance “karateblz” (and your roms have to be zipped). This one works for sure and requires no special bios as far as I know. If you have issue with it then it’s very likely you are not using the correct romset for this mame version.
hope this helps.
nemo93Participanthello hello,
I’m using piFBA and I do confirm that neogeo games run flawlessly with this emulator (except 2 of them: Zedblade and Riding Hero, you have to use mame4all). No need to unzip the roms. You can check this thread for more details:
https://www.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/a-couple-of-questions-for-running-neo-geo-on-pifba/
oh and MvC runs also without any trouble on piFBA (check the supported game list HERE).
hope this helps!
nemo93ParticipantHi Locomat,
how are you doin’? I don’t see any responses to your post hence I’m jumping in.
1. pisnes
I don’t see what you’re doing wrong here. are you sure to have only one COMMAND line not commented out (without # in front of it)? Do you have any errors or output to help diagnose your issue? Also did you try upgrading to Retropie/Emulationstation latest release?2. gngeo
just don’t use this one and switch for piFBA instead. Your games will run at fullspeed and it’s easier to configure as well. Put your bios file within the neogeo “roms” directory. There are a lot of posts in this forum and in the wiki to configure it properly.3. MAME PI
mame4all-rpi is the one to use here. As for piFBA just put your bios in the mame “roms” folder.hope this helps.
nemo93ParticipantFirst of all it’s so great to see new EmulationStation and Retropie releases! thanks to the authors for their hard work.
I’ve not moved over Retropie v2 yet but I’m wondering if this version includes the brand new Amiga emulator (uae4all2 – see HERE) and the fullspeed, perfect-frame PCE-CD emulator (in fact a new version of RetroArch/Libretro/Mednafen more details HERE)?
thanks
