In the meanwhile I it tried again. Ive reinstalled Retropie through uninstall from Setupscript,, complete bin install, same result. Hangs on exit or screen is flooded with audioerrors – it is unusable. I am too tired now to investigate this more; I’ll do a complete reinstall of my complete system now….including Raspbian, everything.

I am not sure, but I think the other errors I have here and there are probably caused by

lvl0: VolumeControl::init() – Failed to find mixer elements

which is the main problem.

Regarding my custom-install: What else can I do instead of a complete binary install (which have had the same errormessage)?

Ok, the image does not show this error…anyhow, changing the sdcard to play is no solution.

So what causes this message?
I have no soundcard and never have had a soundcard connected.

How can this be fixed?

Found out that some more people – as seen in my quote some posts above, or here
Hi,

I want to use an USB audio device with the Pi2. After installing it, no games are started anymore. The following error i can see quickly on the screen:

lvl0: VolumeControl::init() – Failed to find mixer elements
got this message, but both seem to have a soundcard…but why do I get this error without a soundcard?

And more important – how to fix it?

No I compiled it not by myself – I use the official Retropie-Setupscript.

Why should I use the complete image?! I do not want to use it standalone for games only, I use my Pi as a normal pc, so I need a desktop Raspbian.

Furthermore I do not need all the – for me – useless emus (like Zork, Atari, Apple,…) nor I want to install hundreds of things and remove them afterwards! In view of this I install only parts I need since the possibility of this is part of the official setupscript, so I assume it should work!

Btw, as you can read, I also tried a complete binary install – with the same errormessage – so where is the difference?! IF there is a difference to the complete image, its definately a fault by the distributor/ bug/ whatsoever, which needs to be fixed.

It is a Pi 2, actual Raspbian Jessi (I do update, upgrade+dist-upgrade almost daily).
Audio through hdmi, mouse microsoft wireless with its own stick and a bt-stick for my bt-keyboard. Joypad -> usb + a wifi-stick. Everything else works fine, except this message. Memorysplit is actually 256.

I first recognized this after I’ve done a complete binary install (3.5) over my ‘old’ Retropie-install (3.2?, not sure).

Days ago (as described in another thread) I removed Retropie with the new uninstall-option through the setup-script completely. After that I reinstalled it manually, only partial (ES, RetroArch, ScummVM and lrSnes9x) – without change regarding that message.

After a fresh install,
I still get an errormessage when leaving ES saying something like

“lvl0: …init: failed to load Mixer-elements”

– is that normal actually? Is it already known as a problem/bug? Do I make something wrong?

It appears even after I set the audio-output correct to hdmi somewhere in the setup-script.

I use only normal hdmi-ouput, no soundcard, but
Are you using a USB sound card? I am, and I get this error.
it seems I am not the only person having this message!

What causes it? Is there any way to fix it by myself? Is it harmful at all, do you have this error, too?

I’ve had the same problem…

It took a while, but I found out that it now is changeable
easily from the Setup-script (presumably from ES itself, too if you have installed the RGUI-menu), menupoint ‘post-install-options’, then 304 Retroarch-options, point 1.

I like that cause it seems to be changeable for each system – but it was hard to find that out as not even the users here had known that at that time and showed me only the old way…but I told enough now about order and sorting here :P

In the meanwhile I installed ES and Scumm from source,
but no chance – if I change metadata from Scumm-games and try to exit ES – whichever exitoption I take – the system crashes/hangs…

I’ll try RetroPie again when the next release is coming out.

And I found out that it makes no difference if set set audio output correct to hdmi in the post-install-Retropie-Setup-Script menupoint – I still get this message.

Furthermore I found out, that in around 1 of 3 exits to the commandline of my latest EmulationStation-install the system crashes/ hang up completely (what is very “funny” if you entered the third time (until now without success – don’t know how I should get it to save that) the correct names of over 20 ScummVM-games through select and editing their metadata within ES….)…but thats another topic.

Edit: 4 times^^…(but this time I only renamed a few ones)
Retropie also crashes here/ hang with a blinking cursor if I try to restart the system instead of exiting ES to the commandline.

Don’t know whats wrong – but I did a fresh install yesterday.

No, I use standard audio through hdmi, without a soundcard.

Thanks, uninstall+reinstall were fine –
but I still get an errormessage when leaving ES, saying something like

“lvl0: …init: failed to load Mixer-elements”…is that normal?

Regarding
You can manually install things but you have to know what you’re doing.
My idea of sorting the install-menu in a way like this

———————————-RetroPie-Setup—————————-
[*] Emulationstation (neccessary GUI)
[ ] RetroArch addon (Libretro-core)

Emulators for RetroArch (Libretro):
[ ] (Libretro) Atari
[ ] (Libretro) …
[ ] (Libretro) …

Emulators standalone:
[ ] …
[ ] …
[ ] …
———————————————————————-

would make this step easier in my opinion, doesn’t it?

However, is the still shown audio-errormessage normal actually?

Ahhh, I found out that it now is possible to change them somewhere in one of the new option-menus from within ES … seems to be the only way here. Earlier it was possible to do it as descibed by others above….dont know why it does not work here anymore. Is it maybe related to this change that it now is possible from the ES-Retropie-Options-menu?

Do you like senseless menus or emulators? Calling someone a troll is the easiest way do defame if arguments going out, isn´t it? *lol*

Fact is that I am not the only one in this thread consider some things (lr-n64 for example) as ´senseless´, and there is presumably noone who would call the menu shown in the picture some posts above as useful.
Furthermore I am sure lots of people would agree if you ask them that there are easy and good ways to improve some other menus – the setup for example – for a better usability, as I already had shown in another thread.

Btw, regarding your troll: are you aware we are in a “ideas for further enhancements”-thread? Does not seem so to me, Superman.

You can point to the wiki as often as you want – it does not make the mess inside the program itself better. WYSIWYG is a completely different thing.

Btw, someone mentioned its a hobby-project…good point – especially as a hobby-project it would be much easier to manage if everything would be a bit clearer, for everyone.

Der lr-N64 Core ist ein Relikt der Vergangenheit.
Davon red ich ja – warum ist er dann noch da – und wird zur besseren Übersichtlichkeit nicht ganz einfach entfernt?!

Bloating it up with more and more emus definately does not make this software better…quite the contrary.

Or watch this interesting menu – which one would you choose?

(taken some days ago – but as far as I remember 3 (!) menupoints does have exactly the same content)

To point a bit more out what I am talking about:

Installed everything from binary, there is an Infocom-emulator in the ES-menu…with Zork inside…for sure interesting…for a handful of people. If you open it, its very hard/impossible to end it without having a look into some manuals – or in other words impossible on the quick…isn’t it?
However, after this I recommend to give it a try to remove the menupoint by deleting its rom-folder –

I bet most people need to open their browser and have to look into google or manuals first.

Schade.

Cool advice…and when I do not need 90% of all the emulators ???

How do I remove them after they have been installed? Sounds like a (big) waste of time and space (if I need to do that every update)!

AARGH – and after I closed the window running the aborted Setup-script with pressing the x on the border with the mouse, I left the Pi for a while…big mistake!

In the meanwhile ‘something’ from Retropie-Setup-Script was still running – and filled the log-folder continously with the same log…I saw that as it was at 42000 (!!) logfiles….

What is going on here?

No, not here :) I start the game, enter the menu, going to settings, open video filter – and then I have what I’ve written above – nothing. A / .
If I press it, I am in the root-fs. I found the folder by myseld under opt/???retroarch/shaders in the meanwhile, if I open it inside Lxde I can see that the hings I want are inside – but I cant select anything from the menu – whichever folder I open, Rarch tells me ‘no item’.

Ganz genau, da kommt dann dieses Runcommand-Menü, wo ich die Auflösung usw verstellen kann – siehe Link oben das Bild – nur kann ich da nirgends zwischen Glide usw usf umstellen………….

Btw, I still dont get it how this should work :’D

– I can’t find any information how to change that mode through the runcommand in the mentioned link above or in the wiki…….is it point 9, edit custom Retroarch-config? There is nothing inside, empty….what do I need to enter? Where in the wiki do I find any information about changing this?

Because Mario is the only game I get to work with non-lr! Both Zelda have much graphical probs and are unplayable, whatever I set. And Mario hast (lightning-)glitches, too – but runs fast and works.

I hoped that the lr maybe works better….furthermore I hate it to use x different systems….lr here, standalone-emu there….but as said, I never will understand whats Retropies focus is on – to me here is a LOT (!) of disorder :) (sorry to say that, but I am a german piefke)

A black screen is everything I got with the lr-n64-emu since months, whichever rom I took :(
However, I´ll now try to fix that with some different settings.

Of course I´ve read some (this?) manuals, few months ago…but even if there is a good description online, it for sure does not replace a intuitive programdesign itself ;)
