apt-get update and upgrade only apply to the linux repos (like the raspbian repository etc.) these are completely separate from the retropie setup (though some may be needed in order for the retropie build to work- but they are typically already included if you start from a fresh sd image so its not that important)
If you wish to retropie there are a couple ways of doing it:
First and foremost you always want to upgrade the setup script first. That will pull the latest changes from the github repository.
Then you can either update everything with a full binary update (preferred) or full source update (if you really want to wait over 24+ hours for it to compile). Like you said though this will overwrite some configs which is why it is always important to make backups before you update.
Or alternatively you can upgrade emulators individually if you just want a few things updated.
Here’s a quick overview of the setup script that may help clarify things for you.
herbfargusMemberSometimes if you have too many systems emulationstation will freeze, its an annoying limitation of the pi’s processing power.
08/17/2015 at 17:54 in reply to: How do I re-bind the Config key (Tab) for AdvanceMAME? [RetroPie 3.0] #104129herbfargusMemberI don’t know of any config files for mame. You can try reinstalling the binary for it from the setup script: here’s a video if there is any confusion:
herbfargusMemberI’m not sure I understand the question. For some of the issues they are related to emulators specifically (like lr-mame4all and fba-libretro) if your hotkey button and exit button aren’t working at all with anything then it may be a hardware or config issue. You can see this page for creating custom configurations for individual emulators:
https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/RetroArch-Configuration
herbfargusMemberI’ve added a note in the first installation page of the wiki.
Thanks for bringing it up.
herbfargusMemberPerhaps this may be useful to you:
https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Can’t-Insert-Coins%3F
As your input is a gamepad it won’t have an ESC button as that is specific to a keyboard. It functions as the input exit emulator button
herbfargusMemberIts a known issue. Its related to the emulator itself. You can install lr-mgba from the setup script (it might be in experimental, I can’t remember)
See:
https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/issues/914
Or you can switch to gpsp from the run command menu as the game loads or a tedious workaround is to open the rgui of lr-gpsp and load the game from there as that seems to be the only way to get it to load short of using a different emulator.
herbfargusMemberI just use a 64gb sandisk ultra SD card and it is enough for my needs. Other people will run games off a USB stick or the network. I find it easiest just to keep everything on the SD card. As far as card readers go – you can get them anywhere, most will work. When you create the SD image it creates the boot portion with your OS but also has space for ROMs after you expand the filesystem with sudo raspi-config
herbfargusMemberI’ve fixed some of the paths and added it to the new theme downloader from the setup script. Its missing a few things for the retropie menu but it seems as though everything else works.
Once the theme is more complete I’ll work on integrating everything fully in the source so it can be downloaded easily from the setup script.
herbfargusMemberThe raspberry pi doesn’t have built in storage- so the microsd is your operating system and harddrive essentially. So yes- you’ll need to keep the microsd in there if you want it to run.
You can get microsd cards and card readers for pretty cheap online.
The card reader is only needed to install the image from a laptop. You don’t need it afterwards as you can plug the microsd directly into the raspberry pi.
herbfargusMemberIts currently in experimental (it plays fine but the file paths need a bit of work before it can considered stable) you can download it from the experimental section of the setup script. See this video if there is any confusion on how to use the setup script:
Ronoh and I are also testing an alpha netplay build that we are hoping will replace the current super Mario war someday. You can see here for more details:
herbfargusMemberYou’ll have to recode es_systems.cfg manually to call each emulator from retroarch and it will also keep you from being able to switch emulators easily. It would be something similar to this:
retroarch -L /opt/retropie/libretrocores/lr-pocketsnes/libretro.so
Might be a bit different with some more direct paths and a few append configs here and there..
The menu you speak of is called the runcommand menu. It might also be possible to disable it from the retropie setup script somewhere but I haven’t looked into it too much.
herbfargusMemberThank jools (aka buzz)- he’s the one who actually knows how to fix things :P
herbfargusMemberI think you may have found a bug. I tested it and got the same results. I thought that it was supposed to save to /opt/retropie/emulators/gpsp/gpsp.cfg after changing controls but it didn’t seem to do anything. I shall open a ticket on github.
herbfargusMemberI thought there was a save config option in the F10 menu. I don’t have access to my pi right now but I’ll check again once I do.
herbfargusMemberWhile in the emulator press F10 and configure it from there
https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Game-Boy-Advance
herbfargusMemberGlad you got it sorted :)
herbfargusMemberIt would be helpful if you specified which emulator you are using. See this page:
https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/FinalBurn-Alpha
If it’s pifba, then switch the 0 and 1 under the joystick axis options in fba2x.cfg… If that doesn’t work try making one or both negative.
herbfargusMemberThis should fix your issue:
herbfargusMemberThey’ve done a lot more custom changes to emulationstation. There are a couple themes that have some sounds integrated, but retropie focuses more on functionality whereas recalbox focuses more on simplicity and aesthetics. Perhaps in the future some of those things might be integrated, but they aren’t high on the priority list right now.
All of that should be able to be done with themeing alone without changing the source code- you’re more than welcome to create a theme that includes music and we could probably add it to the new theme installation script.
herbfargusMembersudo nano /boot/config.txt let’s you edit. Uncommenting means deleting the
#
at the beginning of a line.herbfargusMemberThat’s probably the issue. I’ll look into that other scraper. you should also check out sselph’s scraper if you haven’t already (https://github.com/sselph/scraper) it’s pretty cool.
herbfargusMemberit looks good, after scraping data though it keeps opening and closing in an infinite loop. some issue with font or sound or something or other… have you had similar issues?
herbfargusMemberyep just copy and paste them right after everything else (it doesn’t matter which order they are in) I made sure they matched your specific buttons.
It should just configure them automatically when you configure your controller for the first time when you boot into emulationstation (it did for me)- it’s odd that it didn’t do that for yours. You’re not the only one though, a few others have had the same thing happen to them.
herbfargusMemberthere’s your problem :P you’re missing the hotkey buttons.
you can manually add these to the list:
input_enable_hotkey_btn = "8" input_exit_emulator_btn = "9" input_save_state_btn = "5" input_load_state_btn = "4" input_menu_toggle_btn = "0" input_state_slot_increase_axis = "+0" input_state_slot_decrease_axis = "-0"
They are pretty self explanatory- the input enable hotkey is your hotkey button (the button you press in order to get key combinations to work with things like exit, save, load, etc)
select+start= exit
select+right bumper= save
select+left bumper= load
etc.herbfargusMemberthe port can be installed from the experimental menu of the setup script. It’s not quite stable yet (in the sense that it doesn’t quite fit our file format- it plays just fine) I’m also looking into replacing it with a netplay build once its finished development.
As far as your hotkeys not working- they should have just been configured automatically when you boot up the first time (when you configured your controller for the first time) this is all assuming that you built it from a fresh image.
once you’ve configured your controller for the first time it will create a config here: /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads
post the results of the .cfg file in the above folder and maybe I can help you sort it out.
Just for reference- This is what Mine looks like:
input_device = "USB gamepad " input_driver = "udev" input_r_btn = "5" input_save_state_btn = "5" input_start_btn = "9" input_exit_emulator_btn = "9" input_l_btn = "4" input_load_state_btn = "4" input_up_axis = "-1" input_a_btn = "1" input_b_btn = "2" input_reset_btn = "2" input_down_axis = "+1" input_right_axis = "+0" input_state_slot_increase_axis = "+0" input_x_btn = "0" input_menu_toggle_btn = "0" input_select_btn = "8" input_enable_hotkey_btn = "8" input_y_btn = "3" input_left_axis = "-0" input_state_slot_decrease_axis = "-0"
herbfargusMemberYour Google drive says it needs permission to download. You may want to look at your sharing settings.
herbfargusMemberI don’t have this boot video- but just FYI video splashscreen support has been integrated into the retropie project by default now starting with 3.0. You can just create a new folder in the splashscreen directory and add your video to it, choose it from the enable splashscreen menu and reboot.
herbfargusMemberIf they are emulator specific issues you may have to sort those out upstream as I’m not sure how much of the retropie project would be able to help with emulator specific support. Other than mucking about with the aformentioned settings i haven’t the slightest clue unfortunately, sorry.
herbfargusMemberI don’t have the same controller so I’m not sure how helpful I would be, but I may be able to point you in the right direction. the guy who works on the piassist script has the same controller and I think with his script you may be able to get it to connect properly. You can see this post here: https://github.com/Death259/PiAssist/issues/28
herbfargusMemberAre you using the same emulators? Also some of the retroarch default configs were changed which may explain the difference in performance. You can change them back from the edit retropie/retroarch configurations menu in the retropie menu. (Video threaded true, etc.) You can also change the default emulator from the run command menu.
herbfargusMemberYou can update the setup script and try a full binary install (make backups first) and it should work but I usually just start from a fresh image.
herbfargusMemberThe attached videos on the n64 wiki page go through some of them, but outside of those videos I haven’t looked into it all that much.
herbfargusMemberIts been added as a request but I doubt it will be added anytime soon- recalbox has done a lot of changes to the emulationstation code, the retropie project has focused more on emulator development.
herbfargusMemberYes- what’s happening is you’re watching an outdated video that still refers to old folders that are no longer part of retropie. Place your ROMs in the n64 folder and you’ll be fine. The wiki is a more accurate resource than videos for current folder paths as it is accurate to the latest version of retropie.
https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Nintendo-64
If you wish to use other versions of mupen64 you can press js0 or any keyboard button as your ROM loads and switch the default emulator there.
