not within retropie, but you can do it on the raspberry pi – http://attractmode.org/
i think it would be cool if retropie had the option of the attactmode front end (especially since emulationstation isn’t getting updated right now). in fact, i might do a thread on this in the suggestions forum!
dankcushionsParticipantruns pretty fine for me at 1080p – even 4 player! some slowdown on some stages (eg the desert one with the train), but it’s makes the sound stutter more than affect the gameplay, really.
i use the mupen64plus emulator (NOT the retroarch version, which seems worse for me). the sound seems to have a slight amount of latency, but i’ve never managed to get to the bottom of that.
i don’t use shaders since it’s running at a native 1080p – it looks really crisp.
dankcushionsParticipantthere’s an option to increase the resolution – have a look in the retroarch menu under ‘core options’. i forget what it’s called. however, it’ll probably just exacerbate your sound stutters! PCSX has no texture filters, aside from all the usual retroarch entire screen shaders.
dankcushionsParticipantlong shot, but are you sure it’s “RetroPie” ? on my system it’s lowercase. i imagine it’s all case sensitive as per the rest of the operating system.(ignore this, mine is RetroPie also!)
dankcushionsParticipantthere’s dat files for this mame set which don’t include clones or neogeo games, which should cut your list down by around 2/3s
have a look here for then and instructions how to use:
https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Managing-ROMsdankcushionsParticipanta pi 2 I assume? works fine for me (at least, for the games that work in pifba)
you might want to check that
video_threaded = true
and
rewind_enable = false in your retroarch.cfgdankcushionsParticipantsorry, minor issue with the FBA-Next spreadsheet herb – last few columns are frozen somehow, so you can’t see the notes column properly. cheers :)
dankcushionsParticipantthere’s probably a way to resolve this for those emulators, but one alternative is to press X when launching the game and change the default emulator for both those systems to the retroarch equivalent:
mame4all-pi to lr-imame4all
gngeo to lr-fba or lr-fba-nextthe compatibility and performance should be about the same. you will need the neogeo.zip in the neogeo roms folder if you haven’t already.
dankcushionsParticipanthaha! well I suppose that’s one solution to that problem :)
dankcushionsParticipantcheck out this page – seems like a similar issue? https://www.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/autofire-on-the-axis/page/5/
dankcushionsParticipantamazing job!
“PS1 setup with up to 4 players” – how did you manage this? pcsx-reaARMed on the pi doesn’t support the multitap. is there another PSX emulator??
dankcushionsParticipant1) yep! that’s emulation station, but it has a theming system. press start when it’s loaded and go to UI settings, and you can select the theme there. you can download new themes in the retropie-setup menu, but i imagine you’ll have to amend the existing for your needs. i thought there was some online help about how to create themes but i can’t find it :( there’s a theme forum here and people have created some really nice ones, so hopefully someone can help @ https://www.petrockblock.com/forums/forum/retropie-project-forum/emulation-station-2-x-themes/
2) there’s an option in the es start menu options > UI settings > ‘on-screen help’ – i think if you turn it off it gets rid of that stuff?
10/19/2015 at 14:28 in reply to: SNES Controller working in Megadrive and SNES but not in Neo Geo and Nintendo 64 #108059dankcushionsParticipantbut what emulators? :) you can configure all these retroarch config files as much as you want, but you might not necessarily be using the retroarch emulator for the systems you’re talking about. i don’t know off by heart what the default emulators are for these systems in 3.1, but it used to be:
neogeo: gngeo (not retroarch)
mame: mame4all-pi (not retroarch)
n64: lr-mupen64plus (retroarch)maybe it’s different now…
dankcushionsParticipantso a wired ps3 controller gets the same error, even without using the dual USB thing?
hmm, in that case I think you might need to configure it manually. i’m not sure why the scripts haven’t worked for you. i’ve had to do that myself recently for an arcade stick – I think you need to follow these instructions:
dankcushionsParticipantthis thread might help?
10/19/2015 at 12:25 in reply to: SNES Controller working in Megadrive and SNES but not in Neo Geo and Nintendo 64 #108051dankcushionsParticipantwhich emulators are you using? if you press X or whatever it is when the game is loading, you can view/change your default emulator for that system. anything with an ‘lr-‘ prefix is a retroarch emulator, and will make use of your retroarch controller config. the rest you have to configure separately (there’s stuff on the wiki about this)
for neogeo, if you use lr-fba or lr-fba-next it should be fine.
for mame, it depends on whether you’ve already got roms, as the romset will dictate what emulators you can use. if you were using mame4all-pi, you can safely use lr-imame4all, for example, as they use the same romset. more stuff on this on the wiki: https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/MAME
for n64, i don’t really recommend the lr/retroarch n64 emulator as it seems to perform worse. you can configure the controls of mupen64plus (assuming that’s what you’re using) following instructions here: https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Nintendo-64
hope that helps :)
dankcushionsParticipantoh absolutely – mame 3D far exceeds the demands of console 3d emulation, which are more interested in the end result than being accurate at a low level.
the pi’s GPU is quite competent compared to the CPU, but I think all of mame is done in software (CPU), which is the main problem, but that’s just how mame is. n64 and dreamcast emulation make use of the GPU.
dankcushionsParticipantlibretro-fba-next or fba-libretro support SFIII/CPS3, which is nice. plus a few later cave shooters that aren’t in the older FBA emus.
mame2003 is pretty good. i really think it’s about as good as we’re going to get with the pi. the things it doesn’t support (apart from my list above), are 3d era which isn’t really feasibly on the pi. i do wonder why 2d scaling games (after burner, etc), and later midway games (MK series) struggle so much, but beyond that i fear there isn’t much optimisation possible.
to compound that, it supports a load of early 3d games (tekken, ridge racer, etc) but because of the version of mame (0.78/2003), they’re in early stages of emulation so have no sound/corruption… BUT it’s no loss as the performance is terrible anyway. the pi 2 just isn’t up to anything beyond ..most.. 2d arcade games.
dankcushionsParticipantyou might find it easier to switch your default emulator (press X when a game is loading) to lr-mame4all (rather than mame4all-pi), which uses the same romset, but is a retroarch emulator, so it uses the global controller setup.
failing that, i think if you have a look in /opt/retropie/configs/mame OR /opt/retropie/emulators/mame you should be able to find mame.cfg, which has all your mame4all-pi control options. you can either manually edit this, or if you delete it i think it recreates itself? backup first! :)
dankcushionsParticipantthis post might help? https://www.petrockblock.com/forums/topic/nes-emulator-video-output-exceeding-screen-edges/
a screenshot of your issue would help – there are varying definitions of what constitutes missing information when it comes to overscan in retro gaming :)
dankcushionsParticipantI have the one downloaded through the setup script and run at 1080p, FYI. some thoughts:
– I think I agree with @tmar89 about the font and colours – I get some slight aliasing on across all the fonts used, apart from the ‘XX GAMES AVAILABLE’ message
– The console release date info scrolls off the right edge of the screen for me. I’m fairly sure I’ve got my overscan set up correctly, as I did that all a while ago to get it pixel perfect. maybe someone else can confirm?
– I really think the game lists would look better if they were left aligned. It’s easier to tell the related games/sequels, when they’re all aligned that way, when you’re scrolling through lists.sorry if this sounds like i’m moaning – the theme is really slick regardless! :)
dankcushionsParticipantupdate on the above – retroarch have closed the issue. they don’t agree that it’s a problem. i’m really disappointed. it’s such a hassle to have two controllers plugged in just to get round this stupid bug.
i suggest copying and pasting this issue reference any time users run into this issue – maybe if it’s not just me talking on that issue, they’ll listen! https://github.com/libretro/RetroArch/issues/2230
dankcushionsParticipanti already split out my neogeo games (i’m using lr-fba as my neogeo emulator) – makes things a lot easier to navigate in ES for sure!
i think speed-wise, i’m not seeing a difference between fba-next and mame2003. fba-next runs CPS3 (and at that, only SFIII properly), but other than that, it’s got everything else capcom covered I think? CPS2 runs full speed on mame2003. are there any other capcom games that don’t, but do on FBA?
currently my list of games that I need to run on fba-next is:
Street Fighter (US set 1)
Street Fighter III 2nd Impact: Giant Attack (USA 970930)
Street Fighter III 3rd Strike: Fight for the Future (Euro 990608)
Street Fighter III: New Generation (Euro 970204)
DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou (V101, Japan)
Espgaluda (V100, Japan)
Progear (010117 USA)
Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition (040202 USA)
Battle Garegga (Europe / USA / Japan / Asia) (Sat Feb 3 1996)
Ketsui Kizuna Jigoku Tachi (Revision 2?, Japan)the rest on the previous list either don’t interest me, or don’t run on FBA-next properly, so i’m pretty happy with my setup, finally :)
dankcushionsParticipanti’m afraid that’s just how it is. it’s not particularly logical. eg, afterburner and the mortal kombat series struggle on all mame/fba emulators, yet street fighter III and all manner of late 90s/00s cave shooters work great.
mame tries to be pretty accurate with its emulation, so i’m assuming that the games that struggle have complex emulation happening when being translated to run on our architecture, rather than being particularly sophisticated/modern. a lot of console emulation (N64) aims to get the same end-result, rather than fully model the hardware.
dankcushionsParticipantit is definitely confusing but the information is out there:
https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Managing-ROMs
assuming you’re using advmame 1.2, the correct dat file references these files:

…so if your downloaded romset does not contain these files, it is incomplete and would fail a scanner check in clrmamepro.
my suggestion is to always download complete sets for the romset your emulator requires (in this case MAME 0.106), and if you’re not confident they are right, run them through a complete scan in clrmamepro. there are no ‘complete’ mame/fba romsets – each are tied to a specific mame/fba version, as are the emulators. you need a matching pair.
dankcushionsParticipanti imagine it’s just a matter of editing es_systems.cfg in /etc/emulationsation/
have a look here: http://emulationstation.org/gettingstarted.html#config
– go to “The es_systems.cfg File” sectionthis would mean a lot of manual rom sorting into directories, though, if you wanted to sort it by something different.
dankcushionsParticipantprogear works fine in lr-fba-next, FYI!
Curiously, the mame emus are very picky with rom contents. Xor tables for finalburn games had to be found in order for them to work. It’s a nightmare to find every each little file that lacks in many roms.
you shouldn’t have to do any of this :) if you use the correct rom set for the emulator, you shouldn’t need to manually locate any files. I’m not even sure what an XOR table is in this context!
dankcushionsParticipantI’ve used CLRMAMEPRO more than is healthy :) it is definitely over complicated for what we need it for, but it does a lot that we don’t!
that said, if you’ve got 0.37b5 romset, you shouldn’t need to use clrmamepro to rebuild it. you should be ok to just dump that entire set into your roms/mame-mame4all directory, and everything should work.
when you say they ‘fail booting’ – what happens? if it’s just a blank screen, you can usually get an error message by looking in /tmp/runcommand.log – this stores the output of the last attempted load. if you paste that error here it might shed some light.
dankcushionsParticipanti’ve done some excel experiments – here’s a list of the games that ARE in FBAnext but are NOT in mame2003 (parent roms ONLY):

(the same list for parents that ARE in mame2003 but not in FBAnext is over 1600, so i figure i want to just use FBAnext for its exclusive games)
of that list, I think it can be further narrowed to get rid of all the neo-geo, stuff that doesn’t work, and duff categories, so I’ll do that now and see if I can’t get a small list of the stuff that’s worth keeping in FBA.
dankcushionsParticipantbest build I’ve seen! I bet it’s got some weight to it also, as a lot of the sticks I’ve used seem too light as they’re not connected to a heavy arcade machine. this seems a practical alternative!
dankcushionsParticipantI’ve been trying to get to the bottom of this one as there’s not a single MAME/FBA libretro core that doesn’t have this issue! Turns out it’s intentional behaviour in retroarch, which seems crazy to me as if the hotkey always took up a button and turned off that buttons normal behaviour, you would never be able to, for example, use SNES controllers in SNES emulators, as they have no buttons to spare!
fortunately, it seems every emulator core EXCEPT the mame/fba cores (and only for some games within), don’t function as intended :P but we’re still left with this problem in all the arcade cores.
i’ve raised this as an issue with retroarch but they seem dismissive of it for some reason: https://github.com/libretro/RetroArch/issues/2230
10/10/2015 at 16:15 in reply to: HOWTO: Use datfiles to eliminate clones, etc, from Mame/FBA/Neogeo #107589dankcushionsParticipanti’ve updated my previous post with just a ‘working’ mame2003 dat, with only working roms. i’ve also done a ‘lite’ set that strips out all non-working games, and clones, bad categories, etc. this is thread is getting messy so i’ll maybe re-do the whole thing once i’m done with the other emulators.
dankcushionsParticipantit’s running on the pi 2:

i’m not sure about the 1.1 version. there’s some stuff on the raspberry pi forums.
dankcushionsParticipant0.78 is definitely the right version for the mame2003 emulator – i’m scraping information from the driver files themselves, calling out these specific games from the romset as not working.
my understanding is that mame development is always playing catch-up with the available rom dumps, so whilst the 2003 0.78 mame romset included a whole lot of stuff, not all of that had been emulated completely yet. i figure that it’s not a huge problem – helps us cut down our game libraries!
i’m going to upload my working dat file in the other thread and then do the same process with lr-imame4all. i hope to reach some sort of conclusion as to what is the best emulator, at the end!
dankcushionsParticipantmupen64plus-testing is not retroarch, only lr-mupen64plus is (lr = libretro = retroarch)
