    So as it turns out, Dosbox seems to be confused by a German keyboard layout on the Raspberry Pi. So the way to “fix” this issue is to set the keyboard layout to US English in raspi-config. Then “keyb gr” in Dosbox correctly sets the German keyboard layout within Dosbox and all keys work.

    Does anybody have an idea why this is?

    With NES, there’s a significant difference for a number of games whether you have the European ROM (PAL) or the US/Japan ROM (NTSC). For example in Super Mario Bros., the music was always played a lot faster in the European version than in the US version.
    So it might be that it is just enough to get the US ROM somewhere.

    Ah, yes – that’s it. Thank you!

    I also noticed that in my retroarch.cfg at the very bottom there was the line
    input_enable_hotkey = nul

    I changed that to tab and now I can do tab+F1 etc. and it works like a charm. Cool!
