If what I read elsewhere is correct, this is actually a memory issue.
The problem is more Rome and systems, the more memory needed by emulationstation (as it effectively hods everything in memory).
Also, if what I read is correct, updating to the newest version should help, as it’s taken the background images and compressed them better…
I ran into the same problem at one point, but ended up fixing it by pulling the N64 rooms (since theyre not playable anyway). I actually tried to find the blurry background images at one point to compress them myself but never found them…
bobbytParticipantAt least I’m beginning to get better at answering my own questions…
I added:
–dpad-as-button
To the config call. Note to anybody who makes this change, when you get back into emulation station it will hose up the control (I had to connect a separate non-xbox controller to bring up the menu to select configure input)…
bobbytParticipantIn doing more searching I Found my answers in the following thread:
Remove xpad and use xboxdrv instead to stop controller light flashing constantly
The short answer is one must first disable the existing Xbox controller driver by adding the following:
blacklist xpad
to /etc/modprobe.d/raspi-blacklist.conf
THEN follow the directions here:
https://github.com/retropie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Setting-up-the-XBox360-controllerUnfortunately this leads back to my previous problem of not being able to run apt-get due to some weird blockage of my ISP (so I can’t do apt-get install xboxdrv)… So I’m stuck with the blinking lights for the time being…
bobbytParticipantSorry for the Bump, but those blinking lights are driving me nuts…
bobbytParticipantI actually ran across a thread on a raspbian forum which makes this look it might be a time warner name server issue. I should know for sure this weekend…
bobbytParticipantIs it just the background images that are white or do you have a blank white screen???
bobbytParticipantI recommend watching this, it compares them:
I came across it a couple days ago and it direcctly addresses emulation as well…
bobbytParticipantMine worked fine after using ./retropie_setup.sh..
I’m still using the built in 360 drivers because I dont know how to uninstall them.
bobbytParticipantI picked up a heat sync and over clocked to 1000, and all the snes games I played worked at normal speed with no sound glitches…
Granted, the games I tried consisted of Super Metroid, Super Metroid and Super Metroid (Plus a couple Super Metroid hacks)…
I picked up the heat sync pack off Amazon for about $5… I’m not 100% certain it was needed at 1000, but I figured it couldn’t hurt…
bobbytParticipantThough I haven’t tested it myself, emulationstation detects 4 controllers when 1 wireless adapter is connected, and retroarch based emulators show text mapping multiple Xbox controllers when starting.
I’d say it’s a good bet one adapter will support up to 4 Xbox controllers…
bobbytParticipantWell, I ended up re setting the system up from scratch…
Was a bit easier the second time around, needles to say I’m making backups before attempting any updates in the future…
bobbytParticipantOK, I just did some testing and determined *I* cannot load:
raspbian.org
From my internet connection.
I found I cannot even connect to it from my laptop, but I also found if I use some kind of proxy on my laptop I can load it… So it appears either my ISP (Time Warner) is blocking raspbian.org OR raspbian.org is blocking me…
I apparently will need to enable a proxy within my Raspberry PI in order to run updates…
bobbytParticipantI’m going to solve this thread and start a separate one.
I’ve determined I cannot access ‘mirrordirector.raspbian.org’ which is preventing updates…
bobbytParticipantYou need to use a command line to to get the controller to work.
Check out the video posted in this thread (someone posted it for me & it got me up & running):
It got me up and running.
Just a note, not all emulators use this, but most do. I had to setup GBA controls by hitting (either F-10 or F-8) while in the emulator (a menu comes up that will allow you to configure the controls).
bobbytParticipantI have more information.
I definitely have an active internet connection, which was confirmed by me a short time ago 2 separate ways.
The first is that I exited to the command line and successfully pinged google.com
The second is I ran the scraper for the first time and downloaded the content. It appears ONLY updates/installs give me the connection error.
Each update tries to connect to a url containing ‘mirror’ in it (I probably would re-run an update to get the full URL but I figured this would work for now).
It seems specifically tied to the ‘apt-get’ command being unable to run. As of now I seemed to have gotten everything working so I don’t really need to run it. However if an update comes out I will not be able to update until I can find a fix for this…
bobbytParticipantIt’s 1080p so ideally it should be right…
What’s odd is it has a full border on all 4 sides of the image. I originally thought perhaps the splash screen image I was using was for 720p, which would explain a full border at 1080p, however when I checked the image size it does appear to correspond to the 1080p resolution…
I was using the Mac OS X like image of light gray with the raspberry in the middle. I decided to invert the image and then adjust the background so it was black to illiminate the border. And though I can’t be certain it actually appears to me like the logo in the middle is larger, making me think that now the image IS displaying at full screen…
But I like the way it looks inverted (it’s more Apple TV boot screen like), so I’m leaving it that way…
bobbytParticipantI believe the issue was due to my controller not having been configured with RetroArch. In the end I managed to get passed this screen by ‘correcting’ the root cause of it, so to speak.
bobbytParticipant>Does this help? The video also shows where the default config files are.
It did. I avoided the setup option because I could not do the first two items. I realize in hindsight that part was done for me.
>Are you connected to the internet?
I should be. The device is connected via an ethernet cable to a hub which all my consoles are connected to (and they all have an internet connection). It also is being given an IP address from my router, which I’m able to connect to with an FTP client….
I haven’t messed with the network settings in any way… The only thing I can think is perhaps it’s not getting a valid name server…
bobbytParticipantI’m not sure what you mean by RetroPie setup script.
At first I thought you meant ./retropie_setup.sh but I quickly found this is a tool for downloading an updating the RetroPie binaries (which suffers from the EXACT same connection issue (111: Connection refused) when I try using it).
The only other thing I can find corresponding with setup is the USB controller setup inside the emulator environment. The problem with this is it seems that mapping doesn’t carry though to the emulators too well, or at all…
When I run one emulator only the direction pad and 1 button seem to be mapped correctly, the others are all over the place or non existent (‘start’ seems to be hiding in one of the primary keypad buttons, and one of the shoulder buttons has no effect (while the other shoulder button is the only one mapped correctly)).
When I run another emulator I get no response from any of the buttons. I’m stuck at the intro screen…
In spite of this, it appears the gamepad itself is properly recognized during setup (even though it only has me assign about half the buttons the gamepad has built in).
This is why I planned on manually modifying the key mappings files in the individual emulator directories, but I ran into a complete inability to run any installers or updaters because there appears to be some kind of proxy automatically enabled on the SD 2.3 card image (and I’ve yet to figure out how to modify this setting).
If there is something else I’m overlooking, I would really appreciate the help…
bobbytParticipantMy best guess on this currently is my gamepad keys are not mapped in the area where the is message is coming up. I’m going to start a separate topic on this as I’m having a different kind of problem with the setup…
