Using Rpi1B+ sd card image in Rpi2

Is it possible to update the sd card image from a Rpi1B+ so that it will work in the Rpi2, or 3 even? With all the set up and configuration I’ve done, I’d prefer to not have to start from scratch with a new image. All of the “apt-get update, etc” instructions I can find online seem to apply to Raspbian builds and I wasn’t sure if it would work the same with a RetroPie build. Just looking for definite confirmation that this will work.

Can anyone confirm that the “sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade” is all that is needed to use an Rpi1 sd card in Rpi2? Do I also need to run the “sudo apt-get dist-upgrade” command?
