This is my first real Pi based project, the only other thing I’ve done is use a Pi for Kodi in my bedroom. So far the plan is still in the early days, I have a Pi2 running RetroPie, an old laptop screen and a load of ideas. The plan is to get a flight case and fit the screen to the inside of the lid and have all the workings in the base of the case. I’ve an idea of how it’s all going to work but have yet to get my head around the power. I want it to run off both mains and battery power but I’m still learning how. It’s been nearly 20 years since I played with electronics.

I will keep you updated on my progress.

Chris, at least the battery-power option is easy: buy a Cellularline charger (like the model PB-03S). It has 4400mAh and can deliver up to 2A… really enough to drive the pi and at least a 3.5 TFT.

Awesome, thank you for that I will go and have a read.

I’ve attached a basic system design plan, if anyone notices anything I’m getting really wrong please feel free to tell me where I’m being stupid.

There isn’t a uk version of the Cellularline charger, boo. Also I need 12v at 4A for my A/D board. I will soor it though.

I have found a controller board for my screen which will be here in a few weeks from China, I really need to wait for that to turn up before I do much else as if I can’t get that working the project will struggle to go anywhere.

I’m looking at doing a similar thing but want to modify a portable DVD player. I decided on using an existing retail product like this because I don’t have access to a 3D printer.

Benefits:
Large screen
Built-in battery (although may replace it with a larger one)
HDMI input
Stereo sound

and may be able to make enough room in the base section (dvd part) to fit an 8bitdo snes controller. Don’t yet know how i’m going to do this but just an idea!
