running mame – overclocking set to high and it's still laggy

I don’t know much about overclocking and that, but i’ve set the overclock to high and I’m trying to run stdragon in mame, but it’s keeps stuttering and it’s quite annoying to use…

I understand how some of the 3D games from PS1 might be tricky for it, but this is just a 2D side scroller, shouldn’t this be easy for the Pi to run?

So my current settings from /boot/config.txt are :

arm_freq=950

core_freq=500
sdram_freq=450
over_voltage=4
gpu_mem=384
avoid_safe_mode=1
overscan_scale=1
disable_splash=1

The game is still laggy – has anyone get it to actually run smoothly? Is this game just a non starter for using with retropie?

Could it be an issue with the rom? How to I know?
