Laggy sound and video

Hello everyone, I am brand new to emulators and I had a couple of questions. I went through the Retropie install and everything went very smoothly. But if I play anything more advanced than NES, even some NES games sound is very poor, the game is very choppy sound and video. N64 is completely unplayable due to lag. I am not sure if these could be bad ROM’s that I downloaded or some other issue. Current setup is:

Pi Model:B+
RetroPie Version Used: 3.0.0 Beta
Built From: SD Image
USB Devices connected: Keyboard
Controller used: Xbox 360 remote (2x)

Overclocked ? Which emulators ? Don’t expect fullspeed n64 on the rpi1 though.

No its not overclocked, I am just using the default emulators.
