Issue configuring Wii Classic Controller w/ adaptor

Hey guys,
I’m trying to use this adaptor in retropie with a wii classic controller:

When I go to configure it (as I’ve done successfully with several other types of controllers), the screen briefly flashes some text (shown in the attached screenshot), and dumps me back to the retropie setup screen, with a message saying the configuration has been saved.

I’ve tried both ports on the adaptor.

Any ideas?
