Controlling kodi with arcade controls

Hi all, newbie here!
With a lot of help from the forums and petrockblock.com I have built a miniarcade running a pi2 and retropie with retrogame to control input via arcade stick and buttons. I’m a novice on a steep learning curve but managed to get it all running perfect (Again using some help), problem I have now is I would like to use my joystick to navigate kodi so it needs to see input as a keystroke but a little stumped on this, had a play with keymap.xml but no luck at the mo… any ideas ??
