So I’m wanting to be able to exit an emulation by pressing a button on my controller. Everywhere I’ve looked has told me to look at /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg or home/pi/RetroPie/configs/all. However, there’s one major issue: neither of those directories exist. Is there some kind of workaround for editing the retroarch.cfg from another directory. Also, I’m new to Linux and the RPi. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i use winscp and cyberduck….
i log into the pi with root permissions.when you put your sdcard into a windows pc you are only able to change the boot.cfg and some other files and yes indeed the /opt/retropie/configs/all/ does not show up. Use “winscp” or “cyberduck” to log into your pi and change any .cfg files…
07/13/2014 at 23:44 #15383hubbie36Participant+1 I have the exact same issue. I can not find the /home/pi/RetroPie/configs/all path anywhere accessing the RetroPie via FileZilla or CyberDuck. I am using the PI account as the ROOT is disabled. This worked perfectly in the v1 release but I can not find the file anywhere in v2 to edit to get the “exit to menu” from the controller.

07/14/2014 at 01:12 #15404copperfield81GuestSimilar issue, did find the retroarch.cfg as indicated above ‘opt/retropie/configs/all’, however it seems to not be updated with the settings I’m using. It seems to just have the mappings for the keyboard, when I’m actually using a USB gamepad to navigate the menus (and the games).
Basically I just want to add a second gamepad, and add a way of exiting the emulator via the gamepad buttons. All of which I’ve read you need to edit the ‘retroarch.cfg’ file…Is another copy of it located elsewhere? Or am I missing something?

It didn’t even occur to me to even use any kind of remote access until I read the replies. I’m gonna try it as soon as WinSCP is set up and bring back some feedback.

Really would like to be able to add an exit sequence to the controller, so I can use my 2 controllers and unplug the keyboard!07/15/2014 at 23:04 #16034hubbie36ParticipantTo access the file, I plugged the Pi into my network using the Ethernet cable. Then fired up FileZilla (you can use any FTP client) and connected to the IP address of the Pi (in my case 192.168.1.15). Make sure you use SFTP (SSH) and not FTP. The username is pi and password raspberry. From here it will list the directory tree. Click the root (/) at the very top to open the system folders and then browse to:
opt/retropie/configs/all
The file can then be copied to your desktop, edited, and sent back. My issue is I don’t know what to put int he file!

input_exit_emulator_btn = 2If you wanted to use ‘select-start’ to exit then: 1 would be the button number for your ‘select’ button and 2 would be the ‘start’ button.

So to summarize if you want to add gamepad exit, follow these steps:1) Have pi plugged in and running.
2) Connect to it over your network, I used filezilla with the SFTP (ssh protocol). To obtain your pi ip address, just exit out of Emulation Station and it will tell you at the prompt what it’s IP address is.
3) Login as user ‘pi’ (def password is raspberry). {Note that in order to overwrite the CFG file I actually had to login as ROOT, so if you get unable to write errors on the CFG file, just login as ROOT}
4) Browse to folder ‘/opt/retropie/configs/all’
5) Copy the ‘retroarch.cfg’ file to your computer, so you can edit it
6) Add the following two lines, substituting the appropriate button numbers for your gamepad (on my logitech USB gamepad, it’s 6 & 7)
input_enable_hotkey_btn = 6
input_exit_emulator_btn = 7Note that when you wish to exit the emulator, you would hold the ‘hotkey’ button and press the ‘exit_emulator’ button, for example, hold select and press start.
7) Use filezilla and upload that file back to ‘/opt/retropie/configs/all’ (again if it doesn’t let you overwrite, login as root)
8) Reboot the PI and enjoy the easy exit button!

– You can find the numbers for the buttons you need in the Emulation Station controller configuration (it tells you the button number when you set them up).
– The format above is correct but you must login to the Pi with the root account to edit the file.
– For anyone using the SNES controller, the SELECT is button 9 and the START is button 8.
Thank you everyone! Working great now. I wish this was part of the core install somehow.

When I open it though, it looks nothing like any of the examples I’ve seen online. Here a sample, it’s a long file. Any ideas what I’m doing wrong???? My controller works fine, I just want to add the emulation exit.
